在日常生活對話中，我們難免會因為某些因素，聽不懂或是不了解對方(說話者)所說的話。例如：文化差異、對方語速太快、不了解某些單字的意思(畢竟英文非我們的母語)等等。因此，遇到這樣子的情形時，學會良好的表達以及詢問方式，就是重要的課題啦！今天就讓我們一起來學習，不同情況下詢問「什麼意思」的英文句子吧！(觀看教學影片)

首先，先科普一下，為什麼波羅標題要打「史密斯」呢？那是因為，年輕人講話總是特別快，我們試著把「什麼意思」唸快一點，就成了 「史密斯」 啦～是不是很有趣呢？好啦！我們趕快進入主題吧！
◎ Part 1 觀念釐清- 「What’s that mean?」 vs. 「What does that mean?」

A:「史密斯」什麼意思? 正確的英文說法是什麼？
A: 不可以這樣說嗎? 「What’s that mean?」
B: 正確來說應該要改成「What does that mean?」
A: 那為什麼我會常常聽到母語者這樣說？
B: 那是因為通常在英文裡，在極為輕鬆的非正式場合，像是聊天或是在隨意的書寫中，很常會把助動詞(does)縮寫為’s。
B: 即使文法跟說法都不太合理，但是大家都習慣這麼用了！你要說它錯嗎？波羅覺得也不算是捏～
結論
雖然「What’s that mean?」 在文法以及語意上有些錯誤，但是因為母語者早已慣用這樣的說法，因此我們基本上都會默認，也不會認為這樣的說法是錯誤的哦！ 再舉個例子，麥當勞的著名口號「I’m loving it」很明顯地就有文法錯誤，但是大家還是照用不誤，對吧！ 可見這已經是大家都能接受的用法了！
好啦 ～ 從上述的句子中，我們已經學會了兩種表達「什麼意思」的用法啦！ 接下來，讓我們好好來細分一下不同的情景下可以使用哪些句子吧！
◎ Part 2「史密斯」什麼意思? 英文可以這樣說
★情景1: 當你沒聽到或是聽不懂對方講的話
- Excuse me? 抱歉？
- Pardon? 抱歉？
- I beg your pardon? 抱歉？
ps.
(1) 非常正式，常見於英式英文。
(2) 語氣比較重的情況下，會有挑釁的意味，指「你有膽再說一次？！」。 - Excuse me, could you repeat the question? 抱歉，你能重複一下問題嗎?
- I’m sorry. Could you say it again? 抱歉。你能再說一遍嗎？
- I didn’t catch what you said. Could you repeat it (more slowly)?
你說的我沒聽懂。你能重複一遍嗎(慢一點)？ - Could you repeat a little louder, please? 請你再大聲重複一次好嗎？
- Would you mind speak up a bit? 可以說話音量再大聲一點嗎？

B: I didn’t catch what you said. Could you repeat it (more slowly)?

- Sorry, I’m afraid I don’t follow you. 抱歉，我沒聽懂你說的話。

- What do you mean (by that)? 那是什麼意思？

(1) 聽得懂對方(說話者)在說什麼，但是就是不明白他/她的意思啊！
(2) 真的有聽沒有懂！對方(說話者) 在說啥毀？
- It’s over my head. 我真的不了解。(超出我的理解範圍)
- It’s beyond me. 我完全不能理解。
- I don’t get it. 我不明白。
- I don’t know what you are trying to tell me.
我不知道你試圖想要告訴我些什麼。 - I don’t know why you said that.
我不知道為什麼你這麼說。(帶有質疑對方的意思) - I can’t see your point. 我不明白你在說什麼。
- What do you mean (by that)? 那是什麼意思？
- Sorry, I don’t know what you want to tell me.
